Old school method for maths

WALT:  To answer questions using a old school method.
Today in maths we had to answer questions using a strategy that carries the one.    It was hard because the questions were long.  I did it on google drawings and I took a screenshot of it.   This is how you do the strategy . So you put the highest number at the top ( in this case 5383) and the low number at the bottom. Then you add. 3+8=11. That is bigger than 10 so you need to put the 1 underneath the 3 and the 8 and put the 1 above. Then add the next numbers and plus 1. Then add the next 1, carry the 1 and keep doing it. Then you have the answer!
Do you know other strategy's?
