Super School Swimming

WALT: To write a blog post about school swimming.

For the past week we have been doing school swimming.
Every morning we catch the bus to QE2 pool to go swimming for 25 minutes.  Two classes go at the same time.  One class swims while the other class does work then they swap round.  It is really fun and I have gotten better at swimming because of it.  I learnt how to do river swim and streamline kick. I really enjoyed doing pencil jumps off the diving block and treading water for 3 minutes.
It was really really fun and I hope we can do it again.  Here are some photos.

Did you do school swimming?

Equity and Equality

WALT: To learn what is fair and what is equity.

Today we had a scenario where everyone had a "injury".  Some were really bad ones and some were not bad at all.  I had a bruised bottom.  Some people had broken backs and some people had colds.  We all went to "Nurse" Nick.  (Mr Gray).  He prescribed us with solutions to our injury.  He gave all of us a band aid (plaster).  He was being fair and equal by giving us the same prescription but he wasn't being equity by giving us what we need.  So that was a great way to learn about equity and equality.  The difference is that equality is giving everyone the same thing or prescription regardless of whether they needed the specific thing or prescription.  But equity is giving someone a thing or prescription that they need even if it is different to other peoples thing or prescriptions.

What do you think equity and equality?

Adages and Proverbs

WALT:  To say the differences and explain what adages and proverbs are.

In Writing we had to make a DLO (Digital Learning Object) on adages and proverbs.  I worked with my friend Kate.  We did it on a Google Drawing.  It was easy to do and I got it done quickly.  Here it is.

What do you know about adages and proverbs?

Form Responses

 WALT: To analyse results.

For Distance Learning we have been making forms and sending them to each other.  My form was What is your favourite type of movie?  24 people responded.  It was a fun task to do and I liked seeing the results.  I did it on Google Forms.  These are the results.

What would you choose?  Let me know in the form!

Cool Commenting

WALT: Do a Positive, Thoughtful and Helpful comment on someones blog and post it to your blog.

In Distance Learning we had to comment on someones blog post and then post that comment to your blog.  I liked this activity and it was easy to do.  I couldn't decide who to comment on and Mr Gray said that we had to comment on someone that we normally wouldn't comment on.  In the end I did a random guess and I ended up with Isaac.  Here is the comment.

Kia Ora Isaac! This is Lily-Rose. I like your post about currency because I learnt that the dollar bill was first introduced in 1967. This reminds me when I did the same activity as you have done. Maybe next time you could make the DLO easier to see and write more in your post. Bye!

If you are in Room 1, who would you comment on?

Helpful Harold

 WALT: Write a letter.

Today in distance learning for writing we had to write a letter to Harold.  (The giraffe that visits schools and teaches them about being healthy.)  You had to tell him about what you have been doing in lock down. I wrote it in Google Docs.  It was an easy activity to do and I finished it quickly.  It was a fun activity to do as well.  I really like it when Harold visits our school.  Here is the letter that I wrote.

Dear Harold,

My name is Lily-Rose and I am a Year 6 student at New Brighton Catholic School.  We are answering your letter as part of our learning.  I have been doing a lot of school work and I have been going outside on the trampoline for at least an hour a day.  I have also been cleaning out my room too.  I put all my china ornaments on one shelf and all my porcelain dolls on the other shelf.  I have also been doing some painting and baking.  I LOVE baking chocolate chip cookies and brownies.  We have been going for bike rides along the river every second day.  Thank you for your letter.

Sincerely,

Lily-Rose.

What would you have written if you did the activity?

New Zealand Money.

WALT: Research the history of New Zealand Money.

Today in maths we had to research the history of New Zealand money.  It was challenging at times but fun to research the history.  I liked doing it because I learnt a lot about money and the people that are on the notes.  I researched on google and this site.  It took me a while to do but I enjoyed it.   I did it on a google drawing.  Here it is.

What do you know about our currency?

The life of Jesus

WALT: Understand the life story of Jesus.

Today for RE we had to watch a video about the life story of Jesus and make notes from it.  It was pretty easy to do because I already know a LOT about Jesus.  I made five bullet points about the video. It was fun and easy to do and I got it done quickly.  Here is the video that I watched.

What do you know about Jesus?

Super Suffragettes

WALT: To make a poster about Kate Sheppard and Meri Te Tai Mangakāhia.

Today for part of my distance learning was to make a poster about Kate Sheppard and Meri Te Tai Mangakāhia.  They were suffragettes in the 1860s when women wanted the right to vote.  It was a fun activity and it was challenging sometimes which is good.  I made the poster on Google drawings.  I liked making it on google drawings because it is a fun tool to use.  Here is the drawing.

What do you know about suffragettes?

How to find verses in the bible.

WALT: To make a video about how to find verses in the bible.

Today in lockdown one of the things that I had to do was to make a video about how to find verses in the bible.  I made a screencastify about it and it was quite easy to do.  In the video I used a google jamboard.  It was really fun to do because I got to add my own sort of touch to it.  The video might not work so just giving you the heads up.  Please comment to this post.

What is your favourite verse in the bible?

Meeting Emma Twigg

WALT: To write a report about personal experiences.

Today at school was a morning that we will always remember.  Olympic gold medallist Emma Twigg came and visited us at school today.  We sang the national anthem and we asked her questions.  She told us about her typical day training.   She trains five hours a day and six days a week.  We got to try on her gold medal and get her autograph.  It was so fun to meet her and now I can say that I have met a gold medallist!

Have you ever met a Olympic medallist?

Photos:

This is me trying on the medal.  (It was taken at a bad time)

This is our class.  (I had my eyes shut in the good photo!)

'mazing Matthew

WALT: To watch and make notes on the video about Matthews gospel.
In RE we had to watch a video on Matthew and take notes on it.
I really like the gospel of Matthew because he tells a lot of parables.
23 prophecies are fulfilled in Matthews gospel! Prophecies that were made thousands of years before!
It was fun and easy to do and I got it done quickly.  I chose Matthew because Jesus tells a lot of parables.

What is your favourite gospel?  Matthew, Mark, Luke or John?
(Gospels are part of the bible.  The bible is split into four parts. They are the four gospels.)
 Here is the video.

Hockey Reflection.

WALT: Write a reflection about the hockey game.

Today for Winter Sports we versed the Banks Avenue Magpies and the South Brighton Eagles.  Banks Ave won and played well. Scarlett got player of the match for that match. We won against the Eagles and I scored a goal and got Player of the Match.  The Magpies got 7-0 to them and we won 7-0 against the Eagles.  It was fun in the last match, but I missed several goals in the first match.

What sport do you play?

Refugee camp

WALT: To experience the life of a refugee.

On Monday the Senior Syndicate walked to the Red Zone and pretended to be refugees.  One the way to the our spot, Mr Gray would blow his whistle and we would have to run for cover, pretending that guards were after us.  Once we got to the spot, we spilt into our house groups.  My house, (Euphrasie or Blue) were making shelters with only three tarps and some twine.  Then we moved on to getting blindfolded and getting guided by a partner through a mine field of "bombs" (cones).  Then we had to answer questions that were in Mandarin to cross the "border".  Finally we got to get a spoonful of rice into our hands and had to eat it straight from our hands.  Then we walked back to school.

It was a fun experience, and it reminded me how some people live.

What do you know about refugees?

 Us getting rice.

Attributes that you use in a poem

 WALT: Decode meaning from poetry

For Reading today the Red group (That's my reading group) had to do the activity that is on slide 6. We had to watch a video about what makes a poem a poem, then we had to write down six things that make a poem a poem. It was easy to do although the person narrating the video was mumbling, so it was hard to understand him. I wrote that the attributes in a poem are rhythm, rhyme, metre, condensed words, intense feelings and breaks in the writing to make it easier to read. I did this in google slides.

Do you have any more attributes that you can use in a poem?

WWF Tiger Protector

WALT: To write the answer to the questions.

For the Summer Learning Journey we have to answer some questions about a animal that the W.W.F (World Wildlife Fund) were saving.  It was a choice between Freshwater Seals or Tigers.  I chose Tigers.

The WWF is working to save Tigers.  They are encouraging people to stop hunting them and to start helping them.  More people are starting to donate to protect them or going out to try and stop the hunters.  I think that they are doing the right thing trying to protect the tigers.

What would you choose?  Freshwater Seals or Tigers?

My Fantastic Beast.

WALT: post a description of your beast. Use interesting adjectives (describing words) to tell us about your beast.

For the Summer learning Journey we have many actives that we can do during the holidays. They earn us points and we get the chance to win prizes. As the WALT tells us we have to post a description about a beast that we made. Here is my description.

I have shimmery red feathers with gold tips on the end of them.  These feathers cover my entire body.  My razor sharp talons can slice a fully grown tree in half.  My eyes are a deep shade of violet and my beak is smooth and golden.  My tail feathers are long and luscious, with special swirls of gold that seems to go on and on.  I can glide for long distances and carry many people at once. I smell like violet scented soap. My feathers are silky and smooth. When I speak you hear a melody of beautiful sounds.  This is me.  What are you?

Please comment and tell me what you think.

What would your beast be like?

Supermarket shopping

WALT: Make good food choices and identify everyday and occasional food.

On Tuesday Room 1 went to Pak n Save to learn about what is in our food and if the food is good for us our not.   A lady called Brittany had taught us how to read the backs of food labels and to figure out if the food is everyday food or occasional food.  We drove there in Ben's mums car.  ( Big thank you to the parent helps)  Once we got there our mission was to find one every day food and one occasional food for each of these types of food.  We had to find occasional and everyday dairy products and milk, Fruit and vegetables , wheat, bread and snack foods.

It was really fun and I learnt a lot of things.  I hope we can go again.

Do you know how to read the back of food labels?

Here is a photo of Izzy and I looking at cereals.  Brittany is in the pink vest.  I am the one with my hair out.

All about Easter Sunday

WALT: Answer questions about Easter Sunday using the coloured hat's

Today in RE we had to pick an event that happened on Holy Week and answer questions about it using the coloured hats.  My friend Kate and I picked Easter Sunday.  We did it on a google drawing.  I liked making it because it was fun and easy to make.  My favourite part was writing the green hat because it is funny.  The hat's are blue, green, yellow, white, black and red.  Here is the google drawing.

What do you know about Holy week?

F.A.I.L

WALT: Learn that failing is okay.

In RE today we had to create a poster that shows that when you fail and carry on, you get good at it.   I made a poster in google drawing.  It has someone holding a ruined soup and them someone with an amazing dish of food.  The images were labelled for reuse.  This was really fun to make, I enjoyed personalising it.

What is something that you are really good at?

Peter and the Wolf

WALT: Reflecting and sharing experiences that we have had.

On Thursday the Year 5-8's went to the Town Hall to see the NZSO ( which is the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra).  We went to experience great music and to see the best musicians in New Zealand.  We went there on buses. My favourite part was the whole thing because  it was all amazing.  My favourite instrument was the violin because I think it makes a wonderful sound, and I have  wanted to play the violin for AGES.  I felt at peace with the world at the time.  In a way the music was soothing.
Have you heard the NZSO?

Purpose of a blog comic - (working progress.)

WALT:  Learning how to use new tools and learning the  purpose of  a blog.

Today in Cybersmart we had to make a comic explaining the purpose of a blog.

My friend Kate and I were working together.  We got the images off  Flaticon and we made the comic on a google drawing.

We didn't get it finished which is why this is called working progress.  It was really fun to make the comic and to give the characters personality's.

Do you know what the purpose of a blog is?

Here is my comic-
